3rd Materials Webinar

Ceramic and Composite Biomaterials for Bone Regeneration

Biomaterials with bone-like characteristics can create suitable microenvironments to effectively guide bone regeneration. In recent decades, new materials have been developed by chemical synthesis or by applying various treatments on materials of natural origin. Along with bone substitutes from the range of calcium phosphates, polymeric composites (functionalized or not) are some of the most attractive concerns in the field of bone osseointegration and bone regeneration applications. The presentations within the webinar will focus on three directions. The first will address a range of methods for obtaining bone substituents from terrestrial and marine materials, both carbonate or calcium phosphate type. It is primarily aimed at obtaining porous materials with improved mechanical strength. The second direction aims, after the introduction in the field of polymeric composites, to present the forms or products from this range used in biomedical sciences. This chapter concludes with the presentation of the fundamental notions and development of polymer-ceramic composites, with emphasis on the methods of synthesis, characterization, and potential applications. The last part of the presentation is approached from a medical point of view and is dedicated to guided bone regeneration (GBR) as a reconstructive procedure of the alveolar ridge, using membranes and bone substitutes. There are many techniques that use biological membranes and bone substitutes to enlarge the vertical and horizontal ridge, lifting the floor of the maxillary sinus or other reconstructions of bone defects. The significance of biological membranes and bone substitutes applications will be exemplified and discussed in various clinical cases.

Webinar Content

On Friday 4 June 2021, MDPI and the Journal Materials organized the 3rd webinar, entitled "Ceramic and Composite Biomaterials for Bone Regeneration".

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Florin Miculescu from the Politehnica University of Bucharest in Romania. He also held the first presentation of the webinar, entitled "Bone Reconstruction Ceramic Biomaterials Derived from Natural Sources and Porogen Agents". Professor Miculescu leads a research group working on advanced methods for materials, biomaterials and nanomaterials synthesis, processing and characterization and he coordinates two research laboratories.

The second presentation was held by Prof. Dr. Stefan Ioan Voicu from the University Politehnica of Bucharest in Romania. He talked about the ceramic-based polymeric composites for osseointegration. Professor Voicu's work is primarily in the field of polymeric membrane materials and processes in the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Engineering.

Dr. Lucian Toma Cioca from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Romania held the last presentation entitled "Clinical Application of Biological Membranes and Bone Substitutes in Oral Surgery".
